Our host in Yuanyang, a talented Chinese photographer, told us about Jianshui. He highly recommended it so we made a stopover on our way back to Kunming. Jianshui has a very beautiful, historic old town, framed by an old city wall. We spend there a night, visited the Hutongs (‘old neighbourhoods’) and an amazing temple, one of the largest Confucian temples in China and for us, one of the most beautiful temples during our trip.
The old part of Jianshui was peaceful and the buildings very well preserved. We felt like being placed back in time of the old dynasties. Strolling around the bustling city outside of the walled part, we visited a little calligraphy school and found a local market with lots of mushrooms from the area in all sizes and shapes you can imagine. We only stayed in Jianshui for a short time, but we were pretty happy to make this little detour.
